Welcome to Providence, Rhode Island.
Capital of Rhode Island and the largest city in the state, located in the northeastern part of the state. Port of entry and major trading center. Providence was named by Roger Williams in honor of "God's merciful Providence" in his finding this spot to settle when expelled by the Puritans from Massachusetts. The official name of the state includes the name of the city, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
The national media is abuzz about Providence. From The New York Times and USA Today to NBC's Today Show and National Public Radio - Providence is being hailed as a city "reborn." A city with "pizzazz." A "model city." One of America's "most livable and successful urban centers." As for ambiance and charm, Providence is unmatched. Providence's vast and well-preserved historic architecture is like no other in the country. The entire downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places - the only major city to be so designated. Water taxis, gondolas, kayaks and canoes ply the rivers that cut a swath through the city's shiny financial district to Narragansett Bay. Horse-drawn carriages usher passengers in and around popular tourist attractions. Coming soon, an outdoor ice skating rink - one that's sure to rival Rockefeller Center's - and a downtown cinema complex. Furthermore, we are one of the best college towns in the nation. According to one visitor who was quoted recently in the daily press, "Providence has the beauty of Paris, the elegance of London, the romance of Rome, the charm of Venice, and the thrill of New York."
The East Side neighborhood of Providence includes the largest contiguous area of National Historic Society-designated buildings in America. The nearby Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum has a fine collection of trees and plants, including the largest sequoia on the East Coast. Roger Williams Park in the southern part of the city contains a zoo and the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium. The city is the home of the renowned theater group Trinity Repertory Company and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra. Providence is also the home of several performing arts centers such as the Veterans Memorial Auditorium and the Providence Performing Arts Center. Providence has a large shopping mall in the center of the city called the Providence Place Mall. Also during the summer months, there are multiple WaterFire events on the downtown rivers. The Bank of America Skating Center, formerly the Fleet Skating Center, is located near Kennedy Plaza in the downtown district. Providence is the home of an Ivy League university as well as several institutions of higher learning: Brown University, Johnson and Wales University, Providence College, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)
